What Is The Most Important Number?

No, this is not a game. Its a serious question. And no the answer is not 2 or 5 or 7 (the numbers that come to mind the first when someone is asked to think of a number).

Find out what's the most important number in this quick clip and lets talk about it on the other side.

What The... Frack

The EPA found over 20 years ago that Horizontal Hydraulic Fracturing (Fracking) contaminates water. In 2005 President George W. Bush signed legislation exempting gas drillers that use fracking techniques from the Clean Water regulation. So much has been spoken, recorded and documented about how fracking is destroying water supplies by polluting them not just with methane (natural gas) but also with a cornucopia of toxic materials, that I am not going to focus on that in this blog. Suffice it to say that the EPA which is beholden to politicians who are beholden to the corporations will do to fracking what S&P did with CDO securities leading to the housing bubble. They will ignore it, down play it, defend it, until everyone gets hurt and then they will issue a no-brainer statement.

Watch actor Mark Ruffalo talk about this topic with Keith Olbermann on Current TV. Mark Ruffalo figured out that as a beneficiary of public goodwill through his art, he owed society something. And he figured he owed society a voice to defend the millions of us who are blinded and mislead by the pretty advertising by the Oil and Natural Gas companies and Industry Groups (lobbies).

Here are some take aways from this interview:
  • Allowing Fracking as a trade-off to fazing off old Nuclear Power Facilities is trading one lousy form of energy for another.
  • Fracturing sets off mini earthquakes which over time threaten the structural integrity of homes near fracking sites.
  • USA Today said that today's highest paying jobs in the fastest growing sector of the ecomony is Green Energy Tech.
  • Gas is not the answer. Gas is the bridge to another 40 years of Carbon based fuels.
  • A New York based fracking company got busted PUMPING IN 150,000 gallons of diesel fuel into the ground. They could pump in any toxic soup and they are not accountable.
  • The water coming out of the fracked landscape cannot be recycled. Its laden with Radium, Uranium and all kinds of toxic substances. Its causing our sewage and water treatment facilities to shut down.
  • Josh Fox's movie Gasland did more to bring this issue to light than anyone in the media or environmental activists could. He took a camera and went into Rural America. He discovered that rural communities after being destroyed turned to who else but the fracking companies for support, signing NDAs (Non Disclosure Agreements) in exchange for money and silence because now their homes and properties were worthless.

How much Carbon-Di-Oxide does your internet browsing create

Here's a cool 2 minute video from the Australian Broadcasting corpoaration

How Green Is Your Internet? from Patrick Clair on Vimeo.

The stats:
Every second of internet puts 0.2gms of CO2 into the atmosphere.
That's 12 gms per minute
Thats 720 gms per hour
Thats 8.6 Kgs over 12 hours that most folks like me spend online.

Youtube users get through 2 billion videos at a conservative average of 10 secs per video for a total of 4000 Tonnes of CO2 per day.
Thats 1.4 million Tonnes of CO2 pe year.

Facebook and Apple use coal fired electricity. That makes them the dirtiest consumers
Yahoo and Google use the cleanest energy sources and Google has invested heavily in developing Wind, Solar and Kite power!

Enjoy the video.

Will Obama Meet His Solar Deadline?

Source: 350.org

Will President Obama meet his self-imposed deadline to get solar panels back on the roof of the White House by the end of this spring? On October 5, 2010, Secretary of Energy Steven Chu announced that the Obama Administration would be returning solar panels to the White House roof. (President Carter installed solar panels on the roof in 1979 only to have them removed by President Reagan a few years later.) This after a lot of cajoling by the good folks at 350.org who found the exiled Carter Solar Panels in Maine and personally drove them down on a biofuel vehicle from Maine to the White House. They were rebuffed repeatedly by the White House until Secretary Chu made the surprise announcement.

The team at 350.org launched a campaign in 2010, “Put Solar On It,” challenging world leaders to install solar at their presidential residences and then follow up with real legislation. Some elected officials seized the opportunity. President Pratibha Devisingh Patil announced a new 50kw array for India’s presidential palace. In October, President Mohamed Nasheed of the Maldives took the challenge a step further, actually getting up his roof to help install the solar panels himself. President Obama made a promise but with Spring 2011 ending on June 21, a week from today, Will Obama Meet His Solar Deadline?

The  answer maybe NO given that the administration is delaying putting out rules for coal plant emissions, calling for expanding oil drilling through nothing less than the President's weekly web address, and increasing fracking.

Yet, we cannot be silent bystanders. We've got to keep putting pressure on the administration, and we know that that is something that the administration likes and believes is the best way to get results.

So take action here and here.

Hold President Obama's feet to the fire.

E. Coli - Yeah that too should make you think of Big Agro, Big Pharma and the Meat Industry

UPDATE: Forensic evidence emerges that European e.coli superbug was bioengineered to produce human fatalities

Source: Taco Bell and E.Coli

Everytime you hear about a new fancy disease, what do you make of it?
Chances are that you hear the 5 min sound bites on TV, panic and immediately decide you are not going to eat the spinach or the tomatoes or the eggs or whatever the latest source of the disease might be. You quarantine yourself if there is say swine flu. Its like the Dept of Homeland Security flipped the switch from Orange to Red!

If you consider yourself wise, I want you to know that often the first word should not be your first impression. I will just relate to you a few possibilities and then leave you with a few links that make the case.

Here are the possibilities:
- The media is telling you something because they need a story to tell.
- The govt is telling you a story because they need a law to be passed.
- The Big Agro Companies like Monsanto, Conagra and Cargill are making up stories to discredit small farmers so they can run them out of business.
- The Big Pharma have just let lose a new strain of a virus because they need to sell a new drug.

Here are a couple of powerful articles that dig deeper into the most recently alarm around E.Coli. If there is anything you take away from it, I hope it will be that we cannot trust big businesses. Our best hope is to return to living with nature the way nature intended things to be:

- consume less of the planets resources even if you can afford to buy another cell phone, another car or a city and a half.
- take care of your health by eating only organic foods
- Supporting locally grown fruits and vegetables
- Cut down on meat because it carries the most disease and it consumes the most virtual water.
- Tip the minimum wage workers

Now for the readings (homework):

E. Coli: Blame the Meat, Not the Sprouts

Germany: Tests show no proof that sprouts from organic farm are cause of E. coli outbreak

Forget About Climate Change, Think About Living Hell

Its late Spring 2011. People are talking about the next iPhone, the next American Idol, Anthony Weiner's Tweets, Sarah Palin's knowledge of History, Donald Trump's Hair, X-Men and Hangover, Rapture and Doomsday, Casey Anthony's presumed guilty before the trial begins, Obama's Birth Certificate, Bin Laden's death, ... and yes there is the uncomfortable reality that we are beginning to notice - the record breaking temperatures on the US East Coast, The Tornadoes in Joplin and the Midwest, the unprecedented draught and wildfires in Texas, the massive unimaginable flooding of the Mississippi.

And then someone comes along and frames the mood of the times through a simple but powerful video that warns you not to believe that the Living Hell you want to avoid has anything to do with Climate change.

That someone is Bill McKibben founder of the global climate campaign 350.org.

Not convinced? Here are some facts:

Green Shipping

This is a cry for help. I have scoured the internet looking for a solution to the following problem and I havent found a good one yet:

Is there a company out there that ships small packages in an environment friendly way?

Basically I am looking for an alternative to Fedex, UPS, USPS. Put another way, I am looking for a company which uses methods other than "flying your mail" to the the destination and relying on the typical hub and spoke model. These "BIG" carriers are beginning to tout "green" programs. However I see that those programs are nothing other than simple carbon offset fees (asking consumers to pay money to offset their carbon consumption instead of actually changing or adding new business models).

If there is anyone out there that can ship a parcel for me across continents at a low cost and for a low carbon footprint even if it takes them a month to get my parcel to the destination, I would like for them to leave me a note so I can do business with them.

For those curious as to why I am asking for a "ship by ship" shipping option check out this graphic:

New poison on your plate - GM Salmon

Source: Food Freedom - Decentralize, Grow Your Own, Buy Local

If  you have never heard of Genetically Modified (GM) foods before, your ignorance is NOT bliss. I will tell you why in a moment.

But first, here’s the breaking news: FDA is on the verge of approving GM Salmon. That would make it the first animal species on this planet that has been given the God-Treament by Man!
Source: CNN

I decided to write this article after I saw the sorry excuse of a report CNN put out today to describe the issues around GM Salmon... a sorry excuse much like a lot of their reporting these days.

Anyhow, getting back to the point. AquaBounty Technologies has submitted an application to the United States Food and Drug Administration to obtain a license for producing and selling their GM Salmon. The genetic modification allows the salmon to grow 50% faster than non-GM salmon. This means GM-salmon is market ready in 18 months instead of the standard 30 month growth cycle for non-GM salmon.

How does FDA decide whether the product being proposed should be certified or not? According to Professor Anne Kapuscinski who is a fisheries biologist at Dartmouth College and spoke to NPR on Sep 7, 2010, FDA looks for 3 things in making its decision whether to grant a licence:
1.     What is the impact of the GM product on Humans?
2.     What is the impact of the GM product on the Environment?
3.     What is the impact of the genetic modification on the Animal (salmon) itself?

The above questions are worthwhile, but there are 3 major problems with the certification process:
1.   The data for answering the above questions is provided by the applicant itself (Aquabounty Technologies). FDA does not carry out its own tests. Among other reasons, a key factor is that FDA wouldn’t have the time, resources or money to carry out its own testing for every product certification application it receives. Unfortunately this always means leaving the fox to guard the henhouse!
2.   When it comes to environmental impact, the FDA does NOT set a criteria that would determine PASS or FAIL. It simply requires the environmental impact to be recorded. This would be like saying that its ok for electronic manufacturers to simply dump lead, mercury, arsenic and other toxic chemicals into the waste pipe as long as they let you know that these chemicals will make their way into your water and food supply and wreak havoc with your body. No, that is simply wrong! Its unacceptable that FDA doesn’t have clear and strict requirements that protect consumers but allow the money lobbies to get away with their crimes. Of course this has everything to do with money and politics that prevent good regulation in this case like so many other cases from being put on the books because ideologues cry “less government” but still want all the safety and protections they can get from the government.
3.   FDA is leaning towards not requiring GM-salmon to carry a label that states that it is genetically modified. Do you realize how awful that is? It means you will have no way of even knowing whether the salmon on your plate is GM or not unless ofcourse if the non-GMO salmon producers label their product as such. Still, who will believe the lables if there is no standard's body that provides the differentiating certificate (a seal of approval). Knowing how little time consumers have to do their own research and the almost blind trust they have in the FDA (or similar authorities), its not a stretch of the imagination to state that gullible consumers will be taken for a ride.

It may turn out that despite all the caveats mentioned above, there is really no danger to human, animal or environmental health after all. However its worth noting that GM-anything (GMO = Genetically Modified Organisms, to be precise) has a checkered past and the case against it has been growing ever stronger.

At the core are 3 problems which GMOs potentially pose:
1.   Allergenicity. In other words GMOs have the potential for generating allergic reactions and we have no way of knowing at this point which food allergies may be caused by which genetic modification. Further there is a real danger of the new allergies thus spawned having no cure.
2.   Gene Transfer. In other words the potential for alteration of the human gene sequence leading to unintended consequences. For instance it is being found that the puberty age in the United States has been dropping leading to girls developing breasts as early as the age of 7 and 10 year old boys standing 6 feet tall.
3.   Outcrossing. In other words the potential for genes from the GMOs to make their way into the wild and alter the gene sequences of naturally occuring organisms (plants… and now salmon?!). Unfortunately this is not just a possibility but now a documented reality.

If you are mad now, make your voice heard. Sign a petition, call your elected representative, leave a comment in this blog.

India, a developing country had the courage to reject Monsanto lead efforts to introduce BT Brinjal. If they can do it, you can do it.

Our Tree Appetite - 4.4 Trees per year

Did you know?

1 tree makes 16.67 reams of copy paper or 8,333.3 sheets
24 trees give you 1 ton of paper.
Source: http://www.conservatree.com/learn/EnviroIssues/TreeStats.shtml

The world consumes 300 million tons of paper each year
At 35% of the world's consumption, the US consumes 90 million tons of paper each year.
38% of paper comes from recycling.
This means 55.8 million tons of paper are sourced from fresh cut trees.
This means 1.3 billion trees are cut to feed America's paper appetite.
This means 4.4 trees are cut for each person living in the US every year!

Trivia:
The single oldest living thing on Earth is a tree, a 4,700 year-old bristlecone pine tree in Nevada. It was growing when the Egyptians built the pyramids.
